This is another one of those books that Booktok has managed to persuade me to read and seeing how it has been collecting dust on my shelf for some time now I thought it was about time I picked it up.
Yale hopeful Bronwyn has never publicly broken a rule.
Sports star Cooper only knows what he’s doing in the baseball diamond.
Bad boy Nate is one misstep away from a life of crime.
Prom queen Addy is holding together the cracks in her perfect life.
And outsider Simon, creator of the notorious gossip app at Bayview High, won’t ever talk about any of them again.
He dies 24 hours before he could post their deepest secrets online. Investigators conclude it’s no accident. All of them are suspects.
Everyone has secrets, right?
What really matters is how far you’ll go to protect them.
Taken from goodreads
As soon as I started reading the first thing that came to mind was this reminds me so much of the start of the breakfast club it is uncanny. 5 people all in detention, all people who normally wouldn’t hang around with each other, me not being a big fan of the breakfast club I hoped that it was going to have any more similarities throughout the read otherwise I was about to be very bored.
Storywise, I enjoyed it a lot. I found the constant mystery aspect to be fun and trying to figure out who killed Simon was surprisingly difficult in a good way as it meant I wanted to keep on reading in order to find out the result.
However, while the story was good, the characters were on the other side of the spectrum. I could not give a single fuck about anything of them by the time the story ended and this is because Karen McManus gave us nothing to actually make us care about the characters. They are all very stereotypical characters to begin with, which didn’t help matters and you know those deepest secrets that they are trying to hide from everyone else? Well imagine the most stereotypical bad thing each and every one of those characters could want to keep secret then BOOM thats their secret and fuck me it was boring to read about.
For a book like this to actually be fun to read through it needs more than just the mystery it needs good characters to make the mystery be more than just a mystery otherwise it is going to fall flat exactly what happened here.
For me if you are wanting to read something that is quick and might keep you on your toes throughout the read then this might be great for you but if you want something with some new and interesting characters then trust me look elsewhere this read won’t be worth it for you.
